10 Ways To Optimize & Speed Up Your PC

by on August 17, 2011

stopwatchIf it feels like your computer takes forever to boot up and you feel like you can take a nap while web pages are loading, then it might be time for you to optimize and speed up your PC. There are many ways to speed up your PC. Below are some of the top ways to get the job done quickly.

1. Get Rid Of Viruses And Spyware

This might seem very obvious, but many people ignore these problems instead of taking care of them. Always run your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs regularly to keep your computer running smoothly. These malicious computer-wreckers can use up your computer’s resources without you even knowing about it.

2. Regularly Run Your Computer’s Cleanup Programs

Under your computer’s system tools in the start menu, you will find disk cleanup and disk defragmenter. These tools can help clean up your computer’s files and free up some space. Having extra space will help your computer to run more efficiently.

3. Get Rid Of Unnecessary Visual Effects

Even though it is appealing to have a nice animated desktop background and other fancy visuals, these things can slow your computer down. If speed is important to you, keeping your computer’s visual appeal to a minimum can help your computer run faster. Depending on your OS, you can personalize your desktop to a less pretty, but much faster, appearance.

4. Disable Unneeded Programs From Start Up

Many people don’t realize they can stop many programs from starting up automatically when you log into your computer. The more programs you disable, the faster your computer will load. To disable some of these startup programs, first go into your control panel and select “administrative tools”. Click on the “Startup” tab to see which programs are listed. Uncheck any that you don’t want to automatically load when you start your computer.

5. Stop Resource-Hogging Processes

Under the Windows Task Manager, look at the “Processes” tab to find any programs that are running and using a lot of RAM. If you know for sure that it is not a necessary program, end the process. If you are not sure, Google the process to see if you need it or not before you end it.

6. Update your OS

Keeping your operating system updated can keep your computer optimized and running smooth. Updates are issued frequently and can fix any problems your OS might have that keep your computer running slow. If you haven’t updated lately, visit the Microsoft update website to see if there are any recent updates.

7. Clear Your Cookies

Every time you visit a website, your computer will save some information from it, like user information and preferences, to help it load faster the next time you visit it. Over time, your cookies can pile up and slow your browsing speed down because it has to search through all the temporary cookie files.

8. Literally Clean Your PC

The fan on your computer is needed to keep your CPU and other components cool and running. If the fan is too dusty or clogged, it won’t be able to run and your computer might overheat. Using a can of air once in a while to clean out the inside of your computer will help it have a longer life. Remember to turn off and unplug your computer before cleaning it. Also, blow the dust away from the computer for best results.

9. Delete Dashboard Widgets

Dashboard widgets can use up a surprising amount of Ram to keep running. By deleting any that are not essential, you will notice a difference immediately.

10. Buy Extra RAM

Even though this will cost money, adding extra RAM to your computer can make your computer run a lot faster and you will be able to run more programs simultaneously. The processor speed is also important, but if you don’t have enough RAM, your computer will still be slow.
